Unlike traditional oxygen tanks that store a fixed amount of oxygen, oxygen concentrators continuously extract oxygen from the surrounding air, making them a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for long-term oxygen therapy.

Oxygen concentrators operate using a process called Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) or membrane separation technology. Here’s a simplified breakdown of how they function:

1. Air Intake: The device draws in ambient air, which consists of approximately 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and other trace gases.
2. Filtration: The air passes through filters to remove dust, bacteria, and other impurities.
3. Nitrogen Separation: The filtered air enters a molecular sieve bed, which absorbs nitrogen, allowing oxygen to pass through.
4. Oxygen Delivery: The purified oxygen is collected and delivered through a nasal cannula or mask to the user.
   
5. Release of Nitrogen: The absorbed nitrogen is periodically expelled back into the atmosphere, ensuring a continuous supply of oxygen.

This cycle repeats continuously, allowing oxygen concentrators to provide a steady flow of oxygen without the need for refilling or replacement.

While both devices serve the purpose of delivering oxygen, they differ significantly in function, convenience, and long-term usability.
